Practicums
What’s Unique About Practicums
Practicums differ from other types of work-integrated learning such as co-op or internships, even where some of the language used to describe various experiences or courses might overlap. What makes a ‘practicum’ unique is the role of an outside professional or accrediting body in setting expectations and providing oversight, for example by establishing criteria for which kind of community partner can rightfully supervise a student’s experience.
Social Work Practicum
McMaster’s school of social work provides experiential education opportunities where students learn from practitioners in human services settings. The practicum, or field placement, is an essential part of undergraduate social work education at McMaster. It is a course in which students meet learning objectives and for which they receive academic credit.
