Work-Integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning (WIL) is a powerful way to connect your academic studies with real-world experience. As defined by CEWIL Canada, WIL is “a form of curricular experiential education that formally integrates a student’s academic studies with quality experiences within a workplace or practice setting.” At McMaster, these opportunities help Social Sciences students build skills, explore career paths, and gain confidence in professional environments.

Through co-op and internships, students engage in paid work under the supervision of employer partners, supported by both the university and host organizations. These experiences are more than just jobs – they’re structured learning opportunities that complement your coursework and prepare you for life after graduation.

Related Forms Of Experiential Learning

While co-op and internships are employment-based forms of WIL, McMaster Social Sciences students also have access to a wide range of experiential learning opportunities that don’t require paid work placements. These include community-based projects, research experiences, and course-integrated activities that foster reflection, skill development, and real-world impact.

According to CEWIL Canada (2021), WIL involves a partnership between at least three key players: the academic institution, the host organization, and the student. At McMaster, this partnership is supported through faculty-specific resources, career prep courses, and advising services that help students make the most of every opportunity.
