International Students

International Student Eligibility for Work-Integrated Learning (WIL)

As an international student you may have questions about your eligibility to participate in employment-based experiences. Here are a few details that might help to make your options clearer:

Co-Op Visit The Co-Op Page

International students in Social Sciences are welcome to apply for co-op programs – most students apply in the spring after completing Level I.

Once admitted, you’ll receive documents to help you apply for a co-op work permit through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This permit usually allows you to work full-time during your approved co-op terms.

We recommend applying for your permit as soon as possible to allow for processing time.

After receiving your permit, you can explore co-op job postings and apply to roles that interest you. Keep in mind:

  • Some employers may not be able to hire international students, even with a permit.
  • Some government-funded co-op programs are not open to international students.
  • McMaster’s co-op team is here to support and advocate for you throughout your job search.

Internships Visit The Internships Page

International students in Social Sciences can apply for elective internships posted on OSCARplus. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Complete the required course: SOC SCI 2EL0 or 2EL3
  2. Request access to the internship job board on OSCARplus
  3. Browse postings and apply to roles that match your visa conditions

Internships vary in length and can begin in different semesters. Keep in mind:

  • Many international students can work full-time in Summer and part-time in Fall and Winter
  • Some employers may not be able to hire international students for certain roles

Visa requirements can differ, so be sure to check the Government of Canada website to confirm your eligibility before applying.

International Student Buddy Program Learn More About The Buddy Program

The International Student Buddy Program is a peer-to-peer program running across the spring, summer, and early fall periods, delivered by the Student Success Centre.

It pairs new international students with experienced McMaster students who offer guidance, answer questions, and help ease the transition to campus life. Buddies often connect through social events, informal chats, and shared activities that build community and confidence.

MSU Clubs Browse The Clubs Directory

International students often find connections and ways to get involved through the McMaster Students Union’s many clubs.

With over 300 student-led groups covering everything from cultural communities and academic interests to hobbies, advocacy, and social causes, there’s something for everyone. Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, build leadership skills, and feel more connected to campus life.
