Frequently-Asked Questions
Before applying to enrol in this this course, you should have already:
- Identified a relevant experiential project.
- Approached an eligible faculty member and confirmed their willingness to act as supervisor for the course (more information in the ‘Eligible Supervisors’ section below).
- Confirmed that there is not another eligible course in the supervisor’s or student’s home program or department which would allow the faculty member to supervise the student for this experiential project.
Once 1 through 3 has been completed, students can contact the Careers & Experiential Office of the Associate Dean Undergraduate Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences. See the ‘Application Process’ question below for how to contact the Careers & Experiential team.
The supervisor must be a Faculty of Social Sciences faculty member in a Social Sciences department or program. This includes tenured, tenure-track, and teaching track faculty members, as well as faculty members with a contractually limited appointment (CLA).
Staff members, sessional instructors who teach on a contract basis or other non-faculty-member individuals are not eligible to supervise this course.
As a supervisor, the faculty member will:
- Confirm their own eligibility and confirm approval, upon request, of the student’s request to add 3EP3.
- Be added in to 3EP3 on Mosaic as a course instructor (note: other instructors may be added, supervising other students).
- Communicate with any on-campus or external partners or experience supervisors, including on any necessary paperwork or due diligence processes.
- Collaborate on a plan for ensuring that the weekly and overall time commitments are appropriate for a 3 unit course.
- Work with the student to define learning objectives and how the objectives will be assessed.
- Develop a plan for communication and assessment of the project’s progress.
- Determine the student’s final grade for the course.
- Co-manage the Mosaic grade submission for 3EP3 in co-ordination with any other students’ supervisor(s).
The Careers & Experiential Education team is not able to volunteer or recommend supervisors for this course.
Students ready for this kind of experience typically apply proactive and resourceful skills such as researching eligible faculty members on departmental sites, using your network of knowledgeable instructors, and consulting with peers.
All Level III or IV students in any Honours program are eligible to apply for this course.
As long as the supervisor is an eligible faculty member of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the student does not be enrolled in a program in the same department as the faculty member or in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Please submit a short paragraph summarizing the requirements outlined above in the ‘Preparing to Apply’ section. It must contain eligibility details and a shared supervisor-student plan.
For example:
- “I am an eligible Level IV Honours student in Sociology. I would like to enrol in 3EP3 to pursue an experiential project under the supervision of Dr. Jane Doe, a faculty member in the Department of Labour Studies. The instructor’s email is [janedoe@mcmaster.ca]. My intended project is a volunteer placement arranged with Ronald McDonald house in Hamilton.”
Completed applications can be submitted through a request ticket either:
- In person at Kenneth Taylor Hall 129
- Online by selecting the option ‘I have questions about the community-engaged placement or project in my course’ in the Careers & EE section of the Student Advising and Support ticketing system.
