Sustainment

For instructors and department leaders in the Faculty of Social Sciences, finding ways to sustain career-focused and experiential education offerings can be difficult. Because undergraduate course resource planning focuses primarily on staffing, individual course instructors typically do not have operating budgets.

Fortunately, department leaders and instructors do have tools at their disposal for long-term planning. This resource page is aimed at supporting department-level decision-making towards sustainable teaching and learning innovation.

Curriculum Course Descriptions

Updating a course description to explicitly mention a particular experience, assignment, or component helps with sustainment. It helps students know what to expect. It cements the departmental commitment to the experience no matter which instructor takes charge, and sets clear and transparent expectations for any potential sessional or replacement instructor. A calendar commitment allows staff to promote a course based on its attractive career or experiential elements, whereas promotion is not possible if the element is not reliably a part of the course.

Course Fees

Departments can generate a course-specific operating budget by adding a course fee to a particular course, to be paid upon registration. Proposed fees are scrutinized and approved by the University Fees Committee. Associating a course fee with a certain course component (lab fees, field costs, etc.) is common practice across the university, where appropriate.

Program Fees

Departments can generate a program-specific operating budget by adding an annual fee for all students in a particular degree program, to be paid upon registration. Again, proposed fees are scrutinized and approved by the University Fees Committee. This can help to generate an operating budget for non-course based program services, components or experiences in the program.
